Landscape and Climate
Thailand is the 50th largest country in the world in terms of area with a land mass totaling 513,120 sq km. Its tropical climate means hot and humid temperatures, with average temperatures hovering at 30⁰C year round. Meanwhile, the wet season between July and October means monsoon-like weather, with an annual rainfall of 102 cm. Much of Thailand is covered by lush tropical rainforest and home to a number of amazing wildlife species including the Asian Elephants. However, deforestation and land clearing has put some of these creatures under threat.
History
Thailand has a long standing regal history of warring states and Kingdoms. The current dynasty was established in 1782 with the induction of the first king, Rama I, the Great. Each subsequent king has taken on the name. Currently, Thailand is a constitutional monarchy, headed by beloved King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX).He is the longest reigning monarch in Thailand and the longest serving head of state in the world. Historically, the Kings have held a strong hand in political negotiations, especially with the West. However, despite the King’s elevated status amongst his people, Thailand has encountered a number of political insurgences within the democratic arm of its government. To date, Thailand remains the only country in the region to avoid colonization by a European nation.
Getting There, Around and Enjoying your Stay
Thailand is the perfect destination for an international holiday and Bangkok is a great starting point to your Thai journey. A thriving port community, Bangkok has all the glitz and glamour attributed to city living. Alternatively, travellers looking for a more relaxing getaway, will head to Phuket, well known for its amazing tropical sunsets and resort style living. Travelers can generally find many cheap flights to Thailand and special deals on offer at their travel agent or on Escape travel.
Once in Thailand, visitors will be drawn to the quaintness of the tuk tuk (three wheeled motorbikes) and rickshaws to get around town. Alternatively, public transport including buses and trains will get you around the cities for relatively cheap. Bangkok, meanwhile, has the most developed public transport system in the nation, including a Skytrain and Metro.
Culture and Cuisine
Thailand is chockfull of cultural iconography. Most Thais are devout Buddhists, so religious symbols and practices take centre stage in the local culture. Temples can be found all over the major cities and towns. Meanwhile, sports such as Thai boxing are an important part of community, as are traditional festivals such as Songkran (the Water Festival). Most travellers will notice the traditional way of greeting between Thai people; known as the wai, the ritual demonstrates a sign of respect for elders, which is paramount in Thai and other Asian cultures.
Of course, Thai cuisine has become exceptionally popular overseas, but first time visitors may be shocked at the impact of authentic Thai food. Curries in Thailand are robust and quite spicy compared with their overseas counterparts.

Did You Know?
Thailand, originally known as Siam, is the only country in the region that has avoided European colonisation. The Thai attribute their success in maintaining their independence to the diplomacy of the Thai Kings and the successful efforts of the government to modernise the country, such as the adaptation of the western fork and spoon in Thai cuisine.
